Danielle Pelkey: ‘Tebowing’ takes place of planking

You may remember the craze of “planking” that rushed through the American youth recently with the help of social media. It seemed that everywhere you looked there were boys and girls, men and women laying in a “plank-style” across various objects and different places.

Planking has now been replaced with a newer and better version called “tebowing.” I looked up the official definition of tebowing and this is what I found: “(verb) to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different.”

What an awesome concept. What a different approach to life. We have all heard the controversy that surrounds Tim Tebow. The boy can’t sneeze without being examined under a microscope and dissected molecule by molecule. And yet he stands on his beliefs. He stands strong in his faith. He has never claimed to be perfect by any means, but he has lived a life in front of the world that proves that perfection is not what God is looking for. He’s looking for willing vessels to work His will through. And Tebow looks to be the most willing vessel I’ve seen in a while.

He seems genuine. I don’t know him, and who knows what happens behind closed doors. But from what I’ve seen and heard, he is pure in his motives and clear in his action. So when someone coined the phrase “tebowing,” I’m sure it wasn’t something that Tim never thought would happen. There’s no way he stopped to pray at random times during his ballgames in hopes that one day people all across the world would “tebow.” No, he did it because it’s what he wanted to do. It’s what he felt he needed to do at the time and yet again, he’s set a new high for himself.

Tebowing pictures on the web can be found happening all across the world. They are doing it in China, Turkey, Israel and Antarctica. It’s amazing how impactful this man is on society. So you can imagine the sadness that came as a group of high school kids “tebowed” after a basketball game in their school gym and got jumped. Yes, they were beaten to the point of real injuries for striking the prayer pose in a walkway after the game.

Now they may have been doing this in spite and with a wrongful attitude, but what if these players were really just sending a prayer up to God to thank Him for the victory over their local rival team? What kind of correction should be put on these boys who beat someone for praying in public?

It’s clear that controversy is going to surround every big movement, and since Tebow is the epitome of big movements right now, there are plenty of opinions. But let’s not over glorify him. Tebow isn’t trying to shine the spotlight on himself, he’s shooting it toward a bigger star — a larger figure — Jesus Christ. So you can sit around and discuss all of the “tebowisms” that you wish, but try to keep the main thing, the main thing. Shine the light back on the Bright and Morning Star, not on yourself.

And I can’t guarantee that I won’t be putting up a few “tebowing” pictures on my personal Facebook. Seems like a fun thing to do and it has purpose. What is your purpose? If you were put in the same shoes as Tim Tebow, what would you be pointing your fans toward? Tebow has taken the torch and ran with it — what have you done with the torch you’ve been given?
