Good morning! Here’s some events that happened after the print edition of The North Jefferson News went to press Tuesday afternoon:
Corner keeps pace, advances to finals. The Yellow Jackets were able to run with an Oak Grove team known for its speedy transition game, winning 58-54 Tuesday night at Gardendale High to advance to the championship game of the small schools division at the Jefferson County Boys Basketball Tournament. Kyle Moody sank two free throws with 6.7 seconds left to seal the win for Corner. Austin Sanford led the Jackets with 20 points. Corner plays Hueytown Friday night at 6:30 for the title. In other JeffCo boys games, Mortimer Jordan defeated Fultondale 60-54 in the small school consolation game, as Mark Louis led the Blue Devils with 24 points; Travez Hicks had 15 for the Wildcats…. Pleasant Grove beat the host Rockets 40-34 in a low-scoring slugfest in the large schools consolation semifinals, as Juan Jackson and Trey Evans paced the Rockets with seven points each; Victor Barnes and KeJuan James had 14 each for the Spartans. In the JeffCo Girls Tournament at Center Point, Pleasant Grove also defeated Gardendale 48-40 in a consolation semifinal, with Chelsey Deloney scoring 16 points and Mallorie Corbin 13 for the Rockets.
Bentley banquet moved up. The Gardendale Chamber of Commerce banquet Thursday night featuring Gov. Robert Bentley has moved up its start time to 6 p.m. Bentley will speak at 6:30, with the meal to be served at 7.
Severe weather threat fizzles. The threat of severe thunderstorms on Tuesday came to nothing in our area. The next couple of days will be markedly colder, with nighttime lows dipping to freezing or below. Temps warm up nicely on Friday. Computer models show a possible chance of significant severe weather next Tuesday or Wednesday, but the models are not entirely in agreement, and as a popular television meteorologist around here likes to say, “That’s out in voodoo country.”
No Wikipedia today. If you were planning on vandalizing the Wikipedia articles about Nick Saban or Gene Chizik on Wednesday, you’ll have to wait. The giant user-editted online encyclopedia, plus oyher popular sites such as Reddit, will go black as they protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and companion legislation being considered by Congress. The bill is designed to curb piracy of music, movies and other copyrighted works, but critics say it goes too far in infringing on free-speech rights.
Dre likes weed. Former Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, who just declared himself eligible for the NFL Draft after winning a BCS championship with the Crimson Tide, was arrested in Palmetto, Fla, a suburb of Tampa, for misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Kirlpatrick was riding in a rental car driven by former Tide defensive back Chris Rogers, when they were pulled over by Palmetto police, who found a little more than a quarter ounce of grass in the car. The arrest report said both men were under the influence at the time. Kirkpatrick was released on $120 bond.
