State Sen. Scott Beason (R-Gardendale) will not confirm rumors that he may be getting ready to take on incumbent 6th District Congressman Spencer Bachus in the upcoming GOP primary.
In a brief interview with The North Jefferson News, Beason said Tuesday that he was keeping his options open.
“I’m in a position now of looking at all the different possibilities,” Beason said. “We will be making a decision in the near future.”
Beason became the subject of rumors that he would take on the sitting chairman of the House Financial Service Committee when residents in the Gardendale area started receiving automated telephone calls last week, asking them to choose who they would support in the Republican primary. Only two options were given, Bachus or Beason.
Additionally, a Facebook page titled “Draft Scott Beason for Congress” was established early in December. Just who set the page up in unclear, as the Facebook user who is the page’s administrator is blocked, as allowed by Facebook. An email address is listed on the page, but repeated emails to that address by The North Jefferson News and other media outlets have gone unanswered.
Candidates for the GOP primary must file their papers by Jan. 13.
We’ll have more on this story in Wednesday’s edition of The North Jefferson News.
