Gardendale enters marketing agreement for center

The Gardendale City Council on Monday authorized an agreement with Eyster Properties for marketing lots at the proposed city center development on Mt. Olive Road.

The resolution authorizes Mayor Othell Phillips to enter into an agreement with the company. Phillips said the agreement will be commission-based; the company will receive no compensation unless it sells property at the site.
In April, the city council voted to sell the city hall building at 970 Main St. for $1.85 million. CVS Pharmacy plans to build a store at the site. The city has until October 2012 to vacate the building.
At the same meeting, the council agreed to purchase the former Caufield Square property on Mt. Olive Road for $1.55 million.
In November, Phillips revealed the city’s plans for the 22-acre site on Mt. Olive Road. Plans include a municipal complex, a 12-screen movie theater, two-story hotel, a medical facility, more than 88,000 square feet of retail space, two restaurants and a plaza.
In other business, the council:
• heard the first reading of a proposed ordinance to rezone 1496 Fieldstown Road from R-1 (single-family residential district) to C-2 (community business

district) for a proposed general retail business.
• adopted new standard operating procedures as adopted by the Storm Water Management Authority.
• opened three bids for a heart monitor and defibrillator for the fire department. The council will consider approval of one of the bids at its next council meeting.
• hired Joel Hilliard as a part-time maintenance worker at the Gardendale-Martha Moore Public Library.
• authorized the street department to gather three quotes to resurface Borden Drive.
Phillips announced that the next council meeting was changed to Jan. 3, 6 p.m., at Gardendale City Hall, because city hall is closed on Jan. 2 for New Year’s.
