The Warrior City Council on Monday approved the use of a plot of land near Interstate 65 for surface coal mining, but not without some restrictions on mining operations.
Permission was given to Warrior 282 LLC to conduct coal mining on the land, located adjacent to the Cane Creek Road interchange (Exit 282) on I-65.
The property, located behind the building that houses Little Caesar’s Pizza and County Line Fuelz and Spirits, is owned by the family of the late Hal Cook.
The council approved mining with the condition that operations be restricted to certain hours, and that the company remove a high retaining wall at the I-65 exit, among other adjustments to the contract.
The company’s permit application with the Alabama Surface Mining Commission estimates that the mine will be in operation for five years. Paperwork filed with the ASMC and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management lists the head of Warrior 282 LLC as Jimmie Ryan. State records show a person by that name as the head of a mining company based in Helena. Efforts to reach Ryan were unsuccessful.
