- The door at D&R Auto Glass in Gardendale is padlocked with a “Keep Out: Uninhabitable” notice on the door. The Gardendale Police Department discovered a meth lab in the building on Tuesday.
A meth bust in Gardendale this week took place only yards from a daycare and medical clinic.
On Tuesday, Gardendale Police arrested Terrence Joseph Best, 32, of Gardendale at D&R Auto Glass at 2253 Decatur Hwy.
He was charged with unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance, utility diversion/tampering and theft of services. His bonds total $60,600.
“It’s extremely dangerous dealing with meth labs,” said Gardendale Police Chief Mike Walker. “There are inhalation hazards and explosion hazards. One whiff of the wrong thing and you’re dead.”
D&R Auto Glass is across U.S. Hwy. 31 from the Gardendale Church of God daycare and is next to the Gardendale Medical Clinic and Gardendale Surgery Associates LLC.
It was unclear whether customers were inside the business during the arrest.
On Friday, the front door of the business was padlocked and a “Keep Out” sticker was pasted across the door.
Walker said the police department had developed some information about a possible meth lab at the business. Upon conducting a search warrant, officers found meth lab components.
“Our troops did a really good job,” Walker said. “There were no injuries.”
Earlier this year, it was announced that the federal government would eliminate funding for meth lab cleanups for 2011. The funding was administered through the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program.
“We are paying for it ourselves,” Walker said. “We recently trained on of our detectives to be a clean-up tech. Also, Warrior sent one of their techs to help with the clean-up. We greatly appreciate their help.”
Walker said the cost went from being more than $2,000 to just over $300 due to having local officers trained to clean up the hazardous labs.
Best was held in the Gardendale City Jail until the warrants were issued. He was transferred to the Jefferson County Jail.
There were no other arrests in the incident.
