Attorney General Luther Strange has announced plans to post guidelines on how the state’s controversial new immigration law should be enforced, even though he’ll have to be circumspect in doing so.

Strange’s office announced Thursday that they would post guidance on their website at http://www.ago.alabama.gov over the coming days, in order to help law enforcement agencies properly enforce the law.

But because the law is the subject of litigation seeking to stop its enforcement, Strange cannot legally issue formal opinions on the law.

The web site has a searchable copy of Act 2011-535 posted so far. There’s also information about what parts of the law are in effect already, what parts will be in effect at a later date, and which parts are not enforceable yet because of court orders in the litigation process.

“I have made it very clear, and I will continue to make it clear, that Alabama will not enforce this law in a way that violates the constitutional rights of people. That is illegal and it will not be tolerated,” Strange said after the law’s passage. He has previously voiced concerns over the parts of the bill affecting schoolchildren.
