The main suspect in the murder of a Center Point man has surrendered.
Corey Lavelle Roland, 18, of Birmingham was arrested without incident by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department after several tips were called in to Crimestoppers, which identified Roland as the likely prepetrator.
Roland is charged with capital murder in the death of Henry Lamar Smoot outside a convenience store on Center Point Parkway near 23rd Avenue Northwest. Smoot was shot and killed on Oct. 23 in an apparent robbery attempt. Video surveillance showed a clear picture of the suspect, which the sheriff’s department distributed via Crimestoppers and on its Facebook page.
The video resulted in three separate calls identifying Roland, according to Chief Deputy Randy Christian.
