Cross country: Mortimer Jordan boys nearly perfect in victory

Mortimer Jordan boys cross country coach Shayne Carnes wasn’t just hoping to win the 17th annual Jefferson County Cross Country Championship.

He was wanting a perfect score of 15 points.
And as the leaders rounded the bend to come into Blue Devil Stadium for the finish Tuesday afternoon, Carnes wishes looked like they were going to come true.
They came in through the front gate first, then second, then third, then fourth, and then … seventh.
The Devils missed a perfect score by just two points, as they dominated the field to take the team championship on their new home course.
Jordan’s Ben Barrett took individual honors with a time of 17 minutes, 39 seconds over the hilly course around the new MJHS campus.
Gatlin Holland was second, 38 seconds behind, followed by Michael Carter and Daniel Barrett.

It took a strong effort by Luis Gonzalez of Shades Valley to come in fifth and break up the host teams chance at perfection.
On the girls side, the top four teams battled it out to deep in the standings, but in the end Center Point edged out Clay-Chalkville, by two points, 74-76. Gardendale was a close third with 82 points, followed by Shades Valley with 85.
Individually, Fultondale’s Mayda Alantara, who has been having a strong regular season, took top honors with a time of 21:08. She was well over a minute ahead of runner-up Ryan Spehn of Shades Valley.
