A Center Point man died late Sunday night in a botched attempt to rob a convenience store.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at a store on Center Point Parkway near 23rd Ave. NW. They found Henry Lamar Smoot, 27, lying in the parking lot from an apparent gunshot wound. Smoot was taken to UAB Hospital; he died in surgery.

Deputies are looking for an unknown black male who witnesses saw running from the scene, whom they believe was trying to rob the store when Smoot resisted.
