Sports Roundup: Elliott, Byrd win statewide honors

Corner place kicker Troy Elliott and quarterback Blake Byrd were recognized by two statewide organizations for their performances last week in the team’s win over Locust Fork.
Elliott was honored for successfully converting six out of six extra points, plus hitting two field goals — one of them drilled from 51 yards out, tying his own school and personal records — by both the Alabama High School Athletic Association in their weekly Prep Spotlight, as well as the Alabama Sports Writers Association and its Player of the Week awards.
Elliott and Byrd were nominees for the ASWA defense/special teams and offense awards, respectively. Elliott was beaten out by Opelika kicker Will Black, whose field goal with 9.5 seconds left lifted the unranked Bulldogs to a major upset over Class 6A No. 3 Prattville, a team that was ranked seventh in the nation by USA Today at the time.
Corner-Dora game moved to Thursday: The Yellow Jackets’ game with the Bulldogs at Dora this week has been moved up to Thursday night, to allow the game to be televised on WABM-My 68’s “Thursday Night Lights.”
Kickoff for this key Class 4A Region 5 matchup remains at 7 p.m.
Torches split in volleyball: Tabernacle Christian lost one match last Friday, then won one Monday to move their season record to 7-11.
The Torches won in straight sets, 25-23, 25-17, 27-25 over Mountain View Christian of Trussville on Monday. Hannah Freeman served eight aces in the match.
Tabernacle lost to Cornerstone Christian of Columbiana by scores of 25-18, 25-9, 25-21. Elizabeth Osborne had four kills and two blocks, Hannah Fressman served two aces and Abbey Roper had seven digs.
The Torches now stand at 2-4 in the ACEAA standings.
Corner hosts tourney: The Jefferson County Small School Volleyball Tournament will be played this Saturday morning at Corner. Fultondale is also among the participants.
