Mt. Olive sheriff’s office substation closing

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office substation in Mt. Olive is one of four scheduled to close because of budget cuts to the sheriff’s office.
In addition to the closures, 101 deputies and 38 civilian workers will also be laid off, according to the sheriff’s office.
The cuts are intended to help make up for a projected $65 million cut in the office’s budget for the next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.
The substation’s fleet was reduced from three patrol cars to one and its patrol area was widened in June when the office had to cut about 20 percent of its budget; Sheriff Mike Hale said it reduced the substation’s effectiveness. At that time, Hale said the department would have to lay off 145 deputies by October.
