The Blue Devils rose to a fast lead and stayed put, beating the A.P. Brewer Patriots 55-20 on Friday.

The Devils’ victory began in the first quarter with a 15-yard pass from Devlin Hodges to Logan Motte. It followed an interception thrown by Brewer only two plays before. It was one of two interceptions thrown by Brewer that night.

Deandres Merriweather ran 5 yards into the end zone for the Devils’ second touchdown of the night, with 4:31 left on the clock. Dobbs ended the first quarter with only 54 seconds left on the clock by catching a 65-yard pass in the end zone, making the score at the end of the first quarter 21-0.

Mortimer Jordan began the second quarter with an immediate 9-yard run by Landon Smith. Dobbs followed up a few minutes later with 7:51 left on the clock with an 18-yard pass from Hodges.

Brewer finally got some wind underneath its feet and Joshua Wilson caught an 8-yard pass from James Daugette. The small victory was short-lived; Mortimer Jordan’s Dobbs ran an 85-yard touchdown on the kickoff return.

The score was 41-6 at the half.

Mortimer Jordan brought in some new faces in the second half. James Day ran a 17-yard touchdown with 9:14 left on the clock.

Brewer’s defense kept Mortimer Jordan at bay for the rest of the quarter.

Brewer’s Nicholas Humphries and Wilson started the final quarter with a bang, with a 25-yard pass from Wilson to Humphries. Brewer’s last score came 6 minutes later at 6:43 left on the clock with a 10-yard pass from Wilson to Daugette.

Just 10 seconds later, though, Mortimer Jordan’s James Day made an 11-yard run into the end zone. With 6:18 left on the clock, the two teams battled back and forth until time ran out.

“I thought we played hard. A game like that gives you confidence,” said Mortimer Jordan Head Coach Greg Watts.  “We are improving. We’re playing  Center Point next week that beat Pinson, and Pinson beat us pretty good…We’ll have a chance to rest up and see what we can do.”

Mortimer Jordan’s total offensive yardage was 442; Brewer’s was 283.

Mortimer Jordan made 10 first downs to Brewer’s nine. Brewer’s Wilson earned four of the first downs, and his passes earned two of those.

It was a night for flags and penalties, too; Mortimer Jordan was penalized six times for 60 yards, and Brewer was penalized seven times for 40 yards. Brewer fumbled twice and lost possession both times, while the Devils recovered both of their fumbles.

Jordan travels to the old Erwin High School field to play newly-renamed Center Point in a non-region game.
