Corner 44, Good Hope 6: Byrd runs for three TDs, passes for two

Corner opened region play with a 44-7 road win at Good Hope Friday.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the first three quarters, getting on the board with eight minutes left in the first quarter when Blake Byrd ran it in from one yard. Troy Elliot kicked the field goal.

In a repeat play with two minutes left in the first quarter, Byrd again scored on a one-yard run with Elliot kicking in the extra points.

Later in the second, the Yellow Jackets’ Jason Teague tackled a Good Hope player in the end zone for a safety.

With 4:06 in the second, Byrd connected with Kerry Smith on an 11-yard pass for a touchdown.

Rounding out the first half, Byrd ran it in four yards for a score. Elliot kicked in the extra points, ending the half at 30-0.

In the third quarter, Byrd passed 56 yards to Smith for a touchdown. At 3:16 in the third, Corner’s Patrick Higgins found paydirt on a 21-yard run.

In the final quarter, Raiders quarterback Jerry Fendley connected with Levi Allred on a 41-yard touchdown pass.

For Corner, Byrd had 15 rushing attempts with 107 yards and three touchdowns. On passing, Byrd was 10-of-15 with two touchdowns.

Smith caught four passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, the Yellow Jackets’ Matt Datani had six sacks.

Next week, Corner plays Oak Grove on the road.
