Kimberly officially becoming a city

When it next meets in July, the town of Kimberly will have legally become a city, its governing body will then be known as the Kimberly City Council. The change officially takes place on June 29.

The council will now meet for two regular sessions each month, as required of cities by state law. At its regular meeting on Tuesday, the council set a regular date for the additional meeting. After brief discussion, the three members present and Mayor Craig Harris agreed to make that meeting on the fourth Monday of each month. The other meeting date remains on the second Tuesday.

The organizational ordinance also established a formal time limit for the general public to comment during meetings.

In other business, the council:

• Opened sealed bids and approved winning bidders on 10 surplus town vehicles, which were sold for just over $7,000.

• Revoked a contractor’s subdivision improvement bond for Ridge Phase I of the Highland subdivision, and ordered that it be liquidated.

• Declined action on another bond in the Meadowridge subdivision, and tabled action on five other bonds.

• Hired a new employee for the public works department, with Harris abstaining because of a conflict of interest.

• Heard plans for a road race tentatively called the Kimberly 5K for Kids, planned for a weekend in the first half of October, with proceeds benefitting the Christmas in Kimberly needy-children charity.
