Gardendale Police said Rutledge was driving north on Main Street in a 1998 Toyota Forerunner when the right rear quarter of the vehicle was struck by a 2009 Mazda traveling west on Fieldstown Road.

Rutledge’s vehicle spun out and flipped, causing his vehicle to strike a third vehicle, a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse that was stopped and facing south on Main Street. All three drivers were Gardendale residents.

Rutledge was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. The crash happened a few minutes after 8 p.m.

Police said no criminal charges are currently being filed, and that the wreck appears to be an accident. Police also said neither drugs nor alcohol seemed to be a factor in the crash.

Witnesses said Rutledge appeared to drive through a red light on Main Street. A group of young people were at a snow-cone stand nearby on Main Street and saw the crash from a distance; they were the first to arrive at the scene.

Police said one of the drivers was sent to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham with minor injuries.

The wreck is still under investigation.
