Tarrant council hires contractors for tornado cleanup

The Tarrant City Council adopted a resolution at a special meeting on Monday that would mobilize a private cleanup crew to remove a large amount debris from a small subdivision on the Fultondale border.
The tornado that destroyed much of Hwy. 31 in Fultondale also hit the Valley Road subdivision in Tarrant. A number of Valley Road residents attended the meeting to voice concerns; many residents said they felt the city departments were slow to act to assist the community.
Tarrant Mayor Loxcil Tuck apologized for the delay, saying that everything the city does has to go through a legal process, which can take some time.
The resolution accepted the bid from a contractor called Unified, which had the lowest bid out of seven contractors
Unified will perform the following services, which will be billed to the city:
• removal and disposal of “eligible vegatitve debris” for $51.50 per ton
• removal and disposal of eligible construction and demolition debris at Turkey Creek Landfill for $53 per ton.
• burn vegetative debris for $10 per ton.
• freon recovery and recycling for $75 per unit.
• electronic waste disposal for $12 per unit
Tuck said Unified could only legally clean up the public roads through the subdivision; each resident would be responsible for gathering the debris and collecting it at their curbs.
Tarrant Fire Department Chief Bill Hewitt said controlled burns are probably out of the question because of state laws; he said it’s possible to ask for special permission, but that it was unlikely because much of the wood had become too dry to safely burn.
Unified’s contract was signed on Tuesday; it becomes effective within 24 hours of signing. City Attorney Benjamin Goldman said the contract is good for 30 days, and that it was possible to extend the contract if need be.
