Mortimer Jordan softball coach Laura Rickman was interested in the outcome of her team’s games against Mountain Brook and Bibb County, to be sure.

But she was at least as interested in the growing pile of relief goods stacked up by the ball park gate. “Wow, we got two whole truckloads of stuff!” she exclaimed.

Saturday’s Mortimer Jordan Round Robin Tournament was all about warming up for area tournaments, but it also ended up being a place for local residents — most of whom escaped serious damage — to donate to those ravaged by last Wednesday’s tornadoes.

As for softball, the Blue Devils tore through the Spartans by an 11-2 score in the opening game, then finished off the Choctaws 5-0 in the nightcap.

Mountain Brook may be coached by former Jordan standout Erin Wright, but her old team showed little mercy, banging out seven runs on six hits in the first two innings alone. Pitcher Blair Johnson batted in two runs on back-to-back sacrifice flies, and Hillary Hardiman added a two-run single in the second inning.

Shelby Maze was 3-for-3 with a double, and Haylie McCleney went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Erin Lopez finished off the attack with a two-run homer in the seventh.

Johnson gave up six hits and one earned run while striking out four Spartans.

In the shutout of Bibb County, the Devils were almost methodical in the early going, scoring its first run when McCleney hit a lead-off single, stole second, advanced on a Shelby Maze hit and came home on Hardiman’s bunt.

The Devils’ offense finally got in gear late in the game, as they took advantage of Choctaw errors. A fly ball to left field Erin Lopez was misplayed, allowing Hardiman to score in the sixth. The situation repeated itself in the seventh, when Johnson’s fly to left was bobbled again, allowing two runs to score. Johnson then came home on a hit by Danae Hays.

But Bibb County couldn’t muster any offense against Johnson, who gave up three hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out three.

Jordan hosts its area tournament beginning Thursday with first round play. They take on Curry in the first game at 4:30 p.m., followed by Hayden playing Walker.
