Kelsey Dodd insists that her job title be listed as “Queen of the Front Desk.”

Dodd works at the front desk at the Gardendale Civic Center; if you walk in the front door while she’s working, Dodd is the first person you see.

She usually scans people’s cards as they walk in (and reminds them if they forget), answers phones and files papers. Occasionally, she has to get her hands dirty.

“One time, some kids got in a fight in the gym,” she said. “I had to go tell them they had to leave. Some guys helped me escort them out.”

Dodd likes the people she works with and the people she meets while working; she said being a people person is a necessity.

“I can get along with anyone,” she said.

Dodd got the job after telling an exercise buddy that she needed more work. Her friend told her about the open spot.

“It’s the easiest job I’ve ever had,” she said. That’s probably for the best, considering she also works shifts at the Gardendale Chick-Fil-A and is a full-time student. She said her civic center job also gives her the flexibility to schedule her work hours around her classes.

Dodd said she also genuinely likes being at the civic center, and that it has a few good perks.

“Plus, I love [civic center director] John Brigham,” she said.
