Tell us about the band.
Back in Time started 17 years ago as a gospel group. About seven years ago, it evolved into an oldies group. We’ve replaced some members over the years, and this is the best group of five I’ve ever had. The other members are my wife, Sheila, Amy Knight, Brandon Bush and Chaz Bush.
Tell us about the concert on April 30.
It’s at 7 p.m. at the Gardendale Civic Center. It’s presented by the city of Gardendale and the Gardendale Arts Council. Tickets are $12. It’s our seventh annual concert; we’ve packed the house at the civic center before.
We’re performing with Rock Candy, which is the best band in the city of Birmingham, if not the whole state. They play instruments, and they’re very good; the horns have played backup to The Temptations. With us combined, you get the full-blown effect: Instruments and a cappella.
What made you interested in singing?
I started singing in church. I started out doing gospel, and then we figured out that people out there still like the doo-wop stuff from the 50s and 60s. Singing’s all I do. I don’t golf, fish or hunt. That’s my hobby.
Do you have a day job?
I’m a repairman for AT&T. I drive a bucket truck.
Tell us about your family.
I will have been married to Sheila for 39 years in June. We have three children and six grandchildren.
