- Johnny Gospodareck volunteers his time to till the soil at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church’s community garden in Gardendale. The church is looking for local volunteers to help with the garden.
A Gardendale church is hoping the third time’s the charm for their community garden project.
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, located on Hwy. 31 in Gardendale, just finished the second tilling of a 90-feet-by-90-feet plot of soil on Tuesday, and hopes to start planting today and through the rest of the week.
The church is asking for volunteers from the community, whether members of the church or not, to help with the garden. Although tilling was mostly a one-man job, the church will need help planting, tending to the crops and harvesting when the time comes.
Parola said all the food grown in the garden will be donated in one fashion or another; some will go home with volunteers, some will go into weekly Wednesday meals the church provides, and some will become other charitable contributions.
Corn, okra, tomatoes, string beans, peppers, eggplant and others are all planned to be planted.
Parola also serves as the system manager for the Gardendale Farmers Market, which is set to to open June 2. It will be open every Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. Look in future editions of the North Jefferson News for more details.
