Tourney raises $15,000

The Katie Burkett Memorial Golf Tournament was held Monday at Castle Pines Golf Course in Gardendale. While there were winning teams and individuals, the main purpose of the event was to raise money for scholarships for Gardendale High School students, in memory of GHS student Katie Burkett.

The 17-year-old died in July 2008 in a car accident. Her family keeps her memory alive by providing other students with college scholarships. Organizer Greg Maxwell said the event raised more than $15,000.

The winners were:

• Closest to pin (a.m.): Ray Perkins (two pins) and Mike Cornelius; closest to pin (p.m.): Jeff Whitfield, Jay Hayes and Bill Griffin

• Longest drive: Nathan Carrter

• First place team, gross score: Bill Griffin, B.D. Little, Jay Hayes, Danny Conner

• First place, net score: Scott Harp, Tim Green, Curt Jarvis, Jeff Caufield

• Second place, gross score: Russell Carter, Al Loudermilk, Mark Lindsey

• Second place, net score: Johnny Manasco, Will Hardimon, Dimitri Marinakis

• Third place, gross score: Mike Gray, Harold Sutphin, Bill Owens, Keith Townes

• Third place, net score: Paul Fields, Mark Bozeman, Phillip Bozeman, Palmer Byrd

Maxwell said many winners donated their cash prizes back to the scholarship fund.

Organizers thank the volunteers, Castle Pines Golf Course staff and family, and sponsors Chick-fil-A in Gardendale and Jim ’N Nicks in Gardendale.
