Basketball: Rockets edge Pinson in OT; Echols scores 42 for Hayden

Jacob Allen hit a 3-pointer with seconds left in regulation to tie the game, then Nathan Sheffield hit a basket and four free thows in the extra period as Gardendale edged host Pinson Valley 66-64 in overtime Tuesday night.

Sheffield scored 22 points and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. The Rockets shot 26-of-30 at the foul line.

In other boys’ games:

Hueytown 79, Hayden 70: Brandon Echols scored 42 points — just one point off the school single-game record — but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Golden Gophers on Monday night in the regular-season finale.

Echols was 7-for-17 from 3-point land. Seth Aderhold had 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Cordarius Samples led Hueytown with 18 points. Wes Saxton and Davion Johnson added 16 each.

Tabernacle Christian 46, Covenant Christian 36: The Torches closed their regular season Monday with a win.

Carson Dabbs had 17 points and six rebounds, and John White added 11 points for Tabernacle.

The Torches are off until the ACEA State Tournament, which begins Feb. 17 in Oxford. Their quarterfinal opponent is yet to be determined.

Hueytown 75, Mortimer Jordan 45: The Gophers scored the first 13 points of the game, and the Blue Devils never caught up in Friday’s loss.

Tyler Pelkey led the Devils with 18 points. Seth Barnett tossed in 12.

GIRLS

Gardendale 56, Pinson Valley 50: Kasey Jones and Kaitlyn Plan each scored 15 points to lead the Rockets on the road Tuesday night.

Bekah Myers scored 12 points.

Hayden 72, Hueytown 35: It was Senior Night for the Wildcats, but junior Krista Stricklin made most of the noise as she tallied 23 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals in Monday night’s victory.

Madison Durham  scored 12 points. Katie Parr grabbed 10 rebounds.

Hueytown 52, Mortimer Jordan 43: Haylie McCleney scored 20 points for the Blue Devils, but fouled out with 6:21 left in Friday night’s game, and the Gophers pulled ahead for the win.

Tiffany Chaviers grabbed 10 rebounds, and Megan Snow blocked eight shots for Jordan.
