Linda Smith said a young girl came to her home, claiming to be selling magazines for the Gardendale High School soccer team. Smith signed up for a two year subscription.

She said the girl was acting suspiciously, so she called the school and asked about fundraisers; she said the school told her the soccer team was selling calendars, but not magazines. She contacted Gardendale police and cancelled the check she wrote the magazine seller.

“I just don’t want other people to fall for it,” she said.

Gardendale police Sergeant Bryan Lynch said police haven’t received any other calls, and he can’t confirm that it’s a scam.

“Sometimes things like this really are a scam, and sometimes it can be a miscommunication,” said Lynch. Police said if people actually receive the magazines the person is selling, then she isn’t technically committing a crime.

Gardendale High School administration refused to comment.
