Finebaum’s weekly column, published by The Press-Register in Mobile and carried by numerous newspapers throught Alabama and the South, has been discontinued. The announcement came from Press-Register Sports Editor Randy Kennedy in an email to subscribing newspapers on Tuesday morning.
Finebaum had not written a column since December, and Kennedy told editors that the situation was still not settled in a message last week.
Finebaum’s column has appeared in the Wednesday edition of The North Jefferson News for just over two years.
Finebaum’s column, which had appearaed twice a week as recently as 2006, began when he was at the now-defunct Birmingham Post-Herald. He left that paper shortly before its demise, and switched to The Press-Register.
Though based in Birmingham, Finebaum’s column did not appear in a metro-area newspaper until a short-lived weekly in suburban Hoover began to run it in 2006. Other local newspapers in the metro area have carried the column off and on, with The North Jefferson News being the last.
The column had become an increasingly small part of Finebaum’s substantial media presence. Most sports fans know him best today for his syndicated afternoon radio show, based out of Birmingham’s WJOX and syndicated to other stations. The show was recently picked up by Sirius XM satellite radio, giving Finebaum a daily national presence, as evidenced by regular callers from California to Chicago.
