Basketball: Rocket boys upset Carver on road, girls rout Jordan

The Rockets were on fire from outside the 3-point arc, hitting 9-of-16 as they scored a 62-54 upset win at Carver in Class 6A Area 11 boys basketball play Thursday night.

Jeremy Gardner scored a season-best 19 points, going 5-for-6 on threes and 4-for-4 from the foul line.

Jacob Allen scored 13 points, and was 7-of-8 at the foul line. Nathan Sheffield added 11 points with a trio of threes. The Rockets shot 51 percent from the floor over all, and hit 11-of-13 free throws.

Gardendale 62, Mortimer Jordan 36: The Blue Devils kept pace with the Rockets in Friday night’s contest until the second quarter, when the hosts pulled away on a pair of 3-point plays near halftime.

Jeremy Gardner scored 18 points with three 3-pointers, and B.J. Hill had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Gardendale. Ben Hardiman led MoJo with 10 points.

Corner 61, Fultondale 25: Jason Vaughn led the Yellow Jackets (19-6) with 14 points and five rebounds on Thursday.

Tyler Jones had 12 points plus six boards. Jordan Shipp and Ted Childers scored eight points each. Ardaruis Stewart led the Wildcats with eight points.

Tabernacle Christian 62, Faith Christian 34: The Torches got Faith’s 6-foot-6 center in foul trouble early, then took full advantage in the first half to go up 40-20 at the break.

John White scored 24 points to lead Tabernacle. “He hustled the floor well to create for himself.  He also finished very well inside on a big Faith front court,” said coach David Corbett.

Carson Dabbs scored 13 points, Wes Felix had 11, and Fred Goodgame added seven points and seven steals.

Moody 60, Mortimer Jordan 42: Ben Hardiman scored 13 points and Tyler Pelkey had 10 for Jordan on Tuesday.

GIRLS

Gardendale 47, Mortimer Jordan 25: The Rockets held the Blue Devils to a sing;e basket in the first quarter, and the rout was on in Friday’s rivalry game.

Kasey Jones scored 17 points and Taylor Lindsay had 11 for Gardendale. Haylie McCleney led MoJo with 17.

Corner 57, Fultondale 27: Taylor Sloan and Shannen Tolbert each scored 14 points to lead the Yellow Jackets in Thursday’s match-up.

Carissa Reeves scored 11 points before leaving the game with an injury to her collarbone area. Andrea Debord came off the bench for 11 points and six rebounds for the Jackets.

Briana Griffin scored 10 points and Karleena Unlap had 9 for the Wildcats.
