Deputies responded to a call from the 4300 block of Jim Tate Road a few minutes before 6 a.m. According to a report by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Randy Christian, the caller said her father had awakened by the sound of barking dogs. When he looked outside to investigate, he saw a strange man sitting in the victim’s truck. After instructing his daughter to call 911, he walked outside to confront the man.

“The suspect attempted to flee, but was tackled and held by the homeowner until deputies arrived,” said Christian. “When deputies arrived and took custody of the suspect, he began to fight with them in an effort to escape.”

Deputies said they eventually managed to subdue and handcuff the suspect, later identified as Joshua Trey Watkins, 18. After Watkins was arrested, deputies said they found a controlled substance in his possession.

Watkins has been charged with unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle, $10,000 bond; resisting arrest, $5,000 bond; and unlawful possession of a controlled substance with a $15,000 bond. Christian said no one was injured in the incident.
