Gardendale’s girls basketball team remains unbeaten, thanks to three straight wins and a championship at the Pelham Thanksgiving Shootout.
Bekah Myers scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Rockets (5-0) defeated Talladega 36-33 in the finals Wednesday. Myers was 11-for-15 at the foul line. She was named to the all-tournament team. Kasey Jones, who had a below-average final game thanks in part to a root canal earlier in the day, was named the MVP.
Gardendale 53, Paul Bryant 49: In Tuesday’s semifinals, Jones led the Rockets with 24 points, including four 3-point goals, as they held off a late charge by the Bears. Myers scored 10 points.
Hayden 71, Corner 41: The Guard Krista Stricklin had a monster night with 36 points, nine steals and eight assists before sitting out most of the fourth quarter, as the Wildcats extended their winning streak to five games.
Stricklin, Katie Parr and Madison Butts grabbed six rebounds each.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Corner 56, Hayden 35: The Wildcats made only two out of 30 attempts from the 3-point line as the Yellow Jackets handed them their first loss. Seth Aderhold led Hayden with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Cold Springs 84, Hayden 61: In the Hanceville Thanksgiving Tournament first round on Wednesday, Brandon Echols had 26 points with five 3-pointers, but that wasn’t enough to stop the Eagles, who were led by Justin Aby with 28 points with six treys.
Hayden 73, Mortimer Jordan 70: In the Wednesday consolation semifinals, the Wildcats survived despite missing six free throws late as the Blue Devils comeback faltered.
Echols scored 22 points and Cory Ward added 10 for Hayden (4-2). Tyler Pelkey scored 17 points, Orion Recke had 13 and Ben Hardiman 12 for Jordan.
