One person was arrested early Thursday after deputies discovered three meth labs in north Jefferson County.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Michael John Williams, 48, a white male, at a home in the 3500 block of Railroad Drive off of Coalburg Road.

Deputies reportedly received information at about 2:15 a.m. that methamphetamine was being “cooked” at the house.

When two deputies arrived to investigate, they knocked on the door and it was answered by Williams, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. The deputies told Williams that there had been a complaint that meth was being manufactured at the residence and asked if they could come in to verify that no lab was there. Williams invited them in.

Deputies discovered three active labs at this location. They also discovered an abandoned mine shaft on the property where debris from previous meth labs had been dumped. The shaft was 50 to 75 feet deep.

Williams was arrested for unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance and taken the Jefferson County Jail, where he is held on $500,000 bond.

No one else has been charged.
