City school officials reconstitute board

The Cullman City Schools board reconstituted their positions at a regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night.

The board is required to reconstitute their posts on a regular basis, and the position of president, vice-president and secretary were established among the current board members.

Steven Sides stepped in as board president, taking over for fellow board member Brenda Howell.

Suzanne Harbin maintained her position as the board vice-president, and Superintendent Dr. Jan Harris was reappointed as the board secretary.

The board also appointed Harris as the official responsible for the signing of official documents, federal proposals, grants, and applications for funds.

The board also:

  • Approved Sept. 21 meeting minutes.
  • Approved September payroll of $1,716,464.64 invoices paid of $839,391.79, and September 2010 financial statements.
  • Granted permission to surplus and salvage a laminator in disrepair from Cullman City Head Start.
  • Permission to surplus and salvage 10 overhead projectors, 12 media carts, 45 youth chairs, 5 media center floor book cases and 5 media center wall book cases from West Elementary School.
  • Granted permission for the Cullman High School FCCLA Club to travel to Charlotte, North Carolina to participate in the National Cluster Meeting on November 18-21.
  • Granted permission for the West Elementary School fifth grade to travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee to visit the Tennessee Aquarium on November 12.
  • Granted permission for the Cullman High School Agri-Science students to travel to Moultrie, Georgia to attend the Sunbelt Ag Expo “largest farm show in the U.S.” on October 18-19.
  • Ratified bid #02-16-10-03 with CDI Computers as the lowest responsible bidder meeting specifications for desktop computers.
  • Ratified bid #02-16-10-04 with CDI Computers as the lowest responsible bidder meeting specifications for laptop computers.
  • Proposed approval of a new Anti-Harassment Board Policy. This item will be sent out to the Policy Review Committee and brought back to the Board for consideration.
  • Approved revised Board Policies IDG, JBA, JCDAA, JBDE, JBDC, JBDB, JBCE to reflect the Alabama compulsory attendance law requiring children ages 7-17 to attend school.
  • Granted permission to accept the quote from Miller Roofing to repair the old gym roof and the baseball field house roof at Cullman High School.  
  • Granted permission to bid #10-12-10-01 and accept the lowest responsible bidder meeting specifications for a wireless fire alarm system for Cullman High School.
  • Granted permission to bid #10-12-10-02 and accept the lowest responsible bidder meeting specifications for the renovation of the special education classroom at Cullman Middle School (ARRA Special Education funding).
  • Approved the Technology Plan update.
  • Granted permission to contract with Erica Ball to fill in as a long-term substitute for a leave of absence beginning November 29, 2010 – May 26, 2011.
  • Granted permission to contract with Patrick Bates to provide network services.
  • Granted permission to contract with Mental Healthcare of Cullman to provide psychological consultation services for Cullman City Head Start.
  • Granted permission to modify the existing contract with Jayne Barnett to assist with ALSDE comprehensive monitoring on a part-time, as needed basis.
  • Alabama Association of School Boards 2010 Convention and Delegate Assembly, December 2-4 in Birmingham. Nomination of board voting delegate and an alternate delegate to attend the convention. Voting delegate: Steven Sides; alternate delegate:  Brenda Howell.
  • Approved leaves of absence for:

— Lanie Williamson, Media Specialist at Cullman City Primary School, requests a leave of absence (FMLA) beginning January 31, 2011 through March 14, 2011.

— Tracy Marsh, third grade teacher at East Elementary School, requests a leave of absence (FMLA) beginning February 17, 2011 through April 4, 2011.

  • Modified the contract for:

— Amanda Callan, instructional assistant at Cullman City Primary School modification of contract to include LPN duties on an as needed basis.

  • Approved the voluntary transfer of:

— Erica Ball, voluntary transfer from instructional assistant to contracted long term substitute at Cullman High School for the remainder of the 2010-2011 school year.

  • Approved the retirement of:

— Alan Pass, Technology Coordinator, retirement effective January 1, 2011.

  • Approved the employment of:

— Pattie Jett, temporary custodian at West Elementary School to fill a leave of absence, beginning October 13, 2010.  Contract length to be determined by the leave of absence.

— Ashley Anderson, temporary 5th grade teacher at East Elementary School to fill a leave of absence, beginning approximately October 22, 2010 through January 3, 2011.

— Judith Osmer, Child Nutrition Program worker at Cullman Middle School, beginning October 13, 2010, effective for the remainder of the 2010-2011 school year.

  • Approved a supplement for:

— Josh Swindall, eighth grade girls’ basketball coach at Cullman Middle School.  (Thomas Duke incorrectly submitted on original supplement schedule)

— Ashley Lochridge, National Jr. Beta Club sponsor at East Elementary School.
