Dora 12, Corner 10: Bitter End

Published 6:17 pm Tuesday, October 5, 2010

Dora’s Stevie Woods (8) pounded it out on the ground, but his 46-yard pass reception set up the Bulldogs’ winning touchdown in their won over Corner.

Corner has made it through much of this so-far successful season by taking advantage of opponents’ mistakes, and minimizing the effects of their own.

But in their 12-10 loss to Dora on Friday, pretty much the opposite happened.

Two turnovers and untimely penalties killed Yellow Jacket opportunities, or extended those of the Bulldogs.

But it was an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Justin Shadix to receiver Caleb May with 69 seconds left to play that sealed the Jackets’ fate.

The Shadix pass had been set up by a 46-yard pass to tailback Stevie Woods, who had pounded and pounded the Corner defensive line and secondary all night with charges up the middle. It seemed like the Jacket defense had finally found an answer to his rushing success, having largely held him in the latter stages of the game.

But when kicker Troy Elliott put Corner up 10-6 on a 31-yard field goal with 3:19 to play, Dora coach Marvin Glover wasforced to abandon his successful ground game and take to the air.

It worked just enough to do the job. Shadix only completed three passes in 10 attempts, but the last two were the most important.

Both teams struggled with mistakes the whole way. Corner’s first touchdown came as a result of a snap over the head od the Bulldog punter deep in his own territory, and Jake Collier ran the ball in from the 11 on the next play.

Dora also had two touchdowns nullified because of penalties. May looked to have scored on a 10-yard run after Woods charged downfield on their opening drive, but an illegal procedure call brought it back, and Corner held.

In the fourth quarter, Shadix found May again for what looked to be a 55-yard score, but a holding call wiped it out.

Likewise for the Jackets, an apparent touchdown pass on the next possession from Blake Byrd to Kerry Smith came back because Byrd was well across the line of scrimmage when he threw the ball.

The Dogs’ first score came barely two minutes after Corner got on the board in the second quarter. Woods and fullback Brendon Pruett served as a one-two punch, driving 65 yards on just four plays. Pruett ran 13 yards straight up the middle for the score. Dora (2-4, 1-3 region) missed the two-point conversion when Kai Thomas was tackled short of the goal line.

The Dogs also missed the conversion on their late touchdown, largely because of an unsportsmanlike conduct call on the scoring play. Corner coach Brent Smith elected to enforce the penalty on the try, putting the Dogs on the 17; the attempt came up well short.

The Jackets (3-3, 2-2 region) had one last drive to try to get into Elliott’s field goal range. Four Byrd passes got Corner down to the Dora 42, but the clock appeared to run out as he was spiking the ball.

The officials ruled that the spike occurred with one second left, giving the Jackets one last desperation attempt to score. But Collier was tackled for a loss as time expired.

Woods ran for 101 yards on 24 carries, while Pruitt had 75 yards on 10 carries for Dora.

Collier had 84 yards on 17 carries for Corner, plus five pass receptions for 43 yards. Receover Nick Webb had six catches for 72 yards.

Byrd was 11-for-17 passing for 108 yards.

Jason Teague had nine solo tackles, four for loss, plus seven assists. Jarred Causey had 10 tackles, for for loss, with three assists.

Corner hosts Fayette County next week.
