Kent Dunaway once worked for a contractor (who in turn worked for Bellsouth) cutting grass part time. He decided, with a little help, he could do it full time and make a living of it.
Six years later, Dunaway Lawn Service is still landscaping north Jefferson County.
“I like looking at a lawn after I’m done with it and seeing how much better I’ve made it,” he said.
Dunaway has a variety of clients, who have big yards, small yards, commercial yards and everything in between. He said people hire him for a many reasons: some of his clients don’t have the equipment (Dunaway has four mowers), others simply don’t want the hassle, and some are even allergic to grass.
“Some people work daylight to dark, and they’d rather spend the weekend with their family instead of working in their yard,” he said.
Dunaway and his team do more than just mow, though. They apply fertilizer, weed control and other chemicals to help lawns grow well. He said many of his clients enjoy mowing their own lawns, and hire him to just lay down chemicals.
Dunaway feels like he’s only gotten better at his job in the last six years.
“I try to improve every time,” he said. “If there’s one thing I try to impress on my guys, it’s if you’re not learning something, then you’re not doing it right.”
