The Central Alabama Devil Dawgs playoff ride has come to an end.
The Dawgs slogged through another weekend of torrential Gulf Coast rains and muddy playing fields, but this time couldn’t overcome the Satsuma Sharks, who won 14-6 Saturday in the semifinals of the Premier South Football League playoffs.
The Sharks, who went through the regular season undefeated, with their only close game coming in a 17-14 win over the Alabama Warriors. They won their first-round game handily the week before, but had tougher going against Central.
The Dawgs’ only score came on their very first play from scrimmage. After drawing the Sharks offside on hard counts twice in a row, running back Aaron Johns took off on a 55-yard run for a touchdown.
Satsuma (12-0) struck just before halftime on a 35-yard scoring run by Tyrone Evans.
The rain and the mud kept both teams from making much offensive headway, but the Sharks finally mounted a late drive, which ended with quarterback Rodeick Robinson sealing the game with a 5-yard touchdown run.
“He’s a little bitty dude, unbelievably fast and elusive,” Dawgs player/coach Jesse Reed said of Robinson. “If it wasn’t for him, we’d have beat them. They didn’t have the talent [we do], but they were a better team. If we can play as a team, we’ll do better next year.”
The Devil Dawgs finish out their inaugural season with eight wins and four losses.
Satsuma will face the second-seeded Rocket City Titans of Huntsville on Saturday PSFL championship game. The winner to advance to the new Minor League BCS Championship in Atlanta on October 16.
