The Gardendale Youth Football Association is hosting the second annual Charity Bowl on Aug. 28 at the G. William Noble Athletic Complex on Moncrief Road. All proceeds from the event benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA).

BCRFA program director Jennifer S. Galbreath said she was surprised last year when the first Charity Bowl raised almost $10,000.

“We were just amazed at what this community has done,” said Galbreath, who organizes fundraisers across the state for breast cancer research. “It really touches my heart to see your city, from banks to grocery stores, come together.”

This year the football association has upped its fundraising goal to $12,000.

“We have the entire Gardendale community involved this year,” said David Padgett, president of the Gardendale Youth Football Association. “Many local businesses and volunteers from the middle and high schools will be at the event to help us raise money for research.”

Galbreath said parents and other volunteers have donated everything for the Charity Bowl, so 100 percent of the proceeds will go to BCRFA.

In addition, Lulu’s on Mt. Olive Road is donating 50 percent of its proceeds from Aug. 28 to the foundation.

The event will include six football games between the Gardendale Youth Football Association and the Vestavia Hills Youth Football Association; a silent auction; food and drinks for sale; childrens’ activities; and vendors from across the state.

Admission to the games is a minimum donation of $4 for adults and $1 for children ages 5-13.

Jeff Dennis Jewelers is the main sponsor of the Charity Bowl, but organizers said they still need event sponsors and donations for the silent auction.
