Meteor shower begins over skies of Warrior
The entire world has been enjoying the Perseid meteor shower this week, but the fun actually began over the skies of Warrior on Aug. 3.
One of the earliest meteors, only an inch in diameter, entered into the atmosphere at a speed of about 134,000 miles an hour, according to the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville. It traveled 65 miles in an instant before burning up about 56 miles above the city of Warrior at about .
MSFC said the meteor was about six times brighter than the planet Venus and would be classified as a “fireball” by meteor scientists.
The meteor could be considered an “earth grazer” because of its long, shallow path and an atmospheric angle of only 12 degrees.
The meteor shower hit its peak on Thursday night, a time when, unfortunately, much of the sky over north Jefferson County was cloudy. The shower should still be visible over the next two or three weeks.
