Officials battle over road closure

The stretch of Bone Dry Road in front of the new Mortimer Jordan High School campus that was closed for over two months is now open after a legal battle between the town of Kimberly and Winter Construction.
Kimberly Mayor Craig Harris said the city gave Winter Construction, the company responsible for the construction of the new campus, a 70-day period of time to make Bone Dry Road safely passable for traffic, and that the 70 days ended on Tuesday.
“There’s traffic on the road anyway. If people run off the road because there’s a road block on a road that’s supposed to be open, we’ve got problems… the city could be sued,” he said.
Joshua Holbert, a project manager for Winter Construction, said the company should technically have until Aug. 23 to make Bone Dry Road passable. He said Winter Construction wasn’t able to get signs warning of the road closure posted until July 1, and that the law states a road can’t be closed until the signs have been up at least two weeks. Harris disagrees, saying the order to close the road was issued on July 1.
“They’re not listening to reason,” said Holbert. “Why open something that’s going to put people at risk?”
