Warriors host Memphis; Tharp in Forrest Wood Cup hunt

It has not been the kind of minor league football season that Lee Ellison hoped for.

The Alabama Warriors, which he owns, coaches and plays for, lost their first five games. They were bounced from the playoffs by the rival Central Alabama Devil Dawgs, a team formed largely by splitting off from the Warriors in the off-season.

Ellison is hoping to finish the year off on a better note, as the Warriors (2-7) close the Premier South Football League season on Saturday afternoon by hosting the Memphis Panthers.

Kickoff time is 4 p.m. at the old Warrior High School stadium.

The Devil Dawgs are off this weekend, thanks to a forfeit. Their scheduled opponent from Panama City, Fla. ceased operations.

Tharp in the hunt: Pro bass angler Randy Tharp reeled in three bass weighing  8 lbs., 8 oz. in the first day of the Forrest Wood Cup on Georgia’s Lake Lanier.

That catch put Tharp in 32nd place out of 74 entrants in the FLW Tour’s championship event.

Daily weigh-ins are at the Gwinnett Center in suburban Atlanta. The tournament concludes Sunday.
