PREP FOOTBALL: Old-timers will take field again at Fairview

Shane Bailey was so pleased with the first 30-and-over football game fundraiser, he couldn’t resist an opportunity to do it again.
Especially since this time the Fairview High old-timers would be playing their biggest rival: Holly Pond.
Thus the beginning of the area’s second-ever 30-and-over football game — the second played in less than three months.
Let’s just call it the Golden Oldies Bowl, Part Deux.
“We’re hoping to have a pretty good crowd,” said Bailey, who serves at the Fairview Quarterback Club president. “We’ve got more than 40 guys out who have been practicing, and Holly Pond has somewhere around 45.
“So there’s been a lot of interest … a lot of people who want to help give something back to the programs.”
And raising money for the high school football programs is the real reason why these past players will suit up one more time tonight — even though a few are still looking forward to reliving past glories.
Kickoff for tonight’s 30-and-over football game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Fairview’s Dafford Smith Stadium. All proceeds will be split between the football programs at Holly Pond and Fairview.
“When us (Fairview) and West Point played earlier this year, we raised about $12,000,” said Bailey, who will be playing for Fairview. “We’re hoping for an even bigger crowd this time.
“The main reason we’re doing this is to raise money for the programs. A lot of these guys can’t write a $1,000 check to the booster club, but if they can come out here and do this, play in a game like this, then they feel that’s a way they can give back. We’re going to try and have as much fun with it as possible.”
