A county official visited Gardendale this week, and she did not come empty-handed.
Jefferson County Commission president Bettye Fine Collins donated $10,000 Wednesday to the Gardendale-Martha Moore Public Library. The money will be used for additions to the library.
The city received a grant of $300,000 two years ago from the state, according to Gardendale Mayor Othell Phillips. It is a matching grant, meaning the city also has to provide $300,000. Phillips said the fund should call Smith at 631-6639.
Also at the council meeting, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers founder Dee Fine announced another cause she is heading up: A campaign against “distracted driving.”
She said drivers face three types of distractions: Taking their eyes off the road, taking their hands off the wheel and taking their minds off the road.
Fine said many things can cause distracted driving, but said text-messaging while driving is the most dangerous because it causes all three types of distractions. In other business, the council:
• approved the transfer of an existing retail beer off-premises license and a new retail table wine off-premises license for Fieldstown Chevron
• tabled a new retail beer off-premises and retail table wine off premises license at Walgreens.
