Alabama polls closed at 7 p.m. Monday for the Republican and Democratic primary elections. As the results slowly trickled in, candidates learned who would and would not face opponents in either a July 13 runoff or in the general election in November.

For the state’s top office, there was a tie on the Republican front between gubernatorial candidates Bradley Byrne with 28 percent and Robert Bentley and Tim James, both with 25 percent.

The winner of a runoff election will face Democrat Ron Sparks, who won 63 percent of the votes to solidly defeat Artur Davis in the Democratic primary.

In Gardendale, Sen. Scott Beason watched with family and friends as the numbers rolled in to finally give him a victory over opponent Jim Murphree.

“We’re very pleased, very blessed,” Beason said when he won the GOP primary. “I thank God for all the people who supported me and I’m looking forward to carrying the Republican banner in the fall.”
