Once a year, the Fultondale City Council holds a council meeting at Fultondale High School, where students watch the proceedings and learn first-hand how local government works.

Fultondale Mayor Jim Lowery said at the meeting that students should learn not only about government but also how they can participate in it.

At the meeting, the council:

• adopted a resolution authorizing Lowery to enter into a contract for renewal for Innovative Utility Solutions for the city

• approved a business license application for Disenos y Creaciones Blue Star retail stores to be located at 1351 Decatur Highway

• adopted a resolution to adopt the sales tax holiday for Aug. 6-8 for the city of Fultondale

•  adopted a resolution to recognize May 2-8 as National Drinking Water Week for the Birmingham Water Works Board.

• heard from political candidates who were running for various offices.

The Fultondale City Council meets the second and fourth Mondays of the month, 11:30 a.m., at Fultondale City Hall.
