Beaver problem alleviated

Bill and Martha Thomas, of Cades Cove in Gardendale, said the city has resolved a problem with beaver dams that were stopping up the creek behind their house. The water was pooling and stagnated, causing danger of mosquitos and possible flooding. However, the Thomases said crews removed the dams and the water has returned to its normal level. “We are very appreciative of … the efforts of the mayor (Othell Phillips) in getting this resolved,” the Thomases wrote in an email.

NJN sports editor honored

Robert Carter, sports editor of The North Jefferson News, was named sports writer of the year, Division 3, for the 2009 “Best of CNHI” newspaper contest. Division three includes non-daily newspapers across the U.S.

Carter joined the staff of the NJN in October 2008.
