Mortimer Jordan 7, Pleasant Grove 0: Parker has big game against her old team

Mortimer Jordan pitcher Heather Parker teed off on a Kendyl Shelton pitch, and sent it sailing over the left field fence for a home run as the Blue Devils beat Pleasant Grove 7-0 Wednesday.

It was a homecoming, of sorts, for Heather Parker. And she made sure the home crowd didn’t forget about her.

Parker struck out seven Pleasant Grove betters over six innings, and blasted a two-run homer to left field as Mortimer Jordan blanked the Spartans 7-0 on Wednesday.

“Heather is a good team leader, and a vocal leader, too,” Blue Devils coach Laura Rickman said.

Parker, who grew up in “The Grove,” transferred to Jordan before the 2008-09 school year. She’s been shouldering most of the pitching duties since Blair Johnson suffered a broken arm on the Devils’ trip to California. (Johnson is expected to return for the regional playoffs.)

Spartan pitcher Kendyl Shelton had the advantage over Jordan batters her first time through the order, holding them to just a Shelby McGraw single. But subsequent trips through the order didn’t work out as well.

Jordan scored three runs in the fourth inning, two of them off a Danae Hays double. Hays then scored on a Parker hit.

Morgan Estell’s triple in the fifth drove in a run, then Parker brought Estell in on the homer.

Estell hit an RBI single in the sixth inning.

The win gave the Devils an unblemished 8-0 area record. They will host the area tournament next Friday and Saturday.
