NJN 2010 Wrestling All-Star Team: Best on the mats
Published 2:06 pm Monday, April 5, 2010
The 2010 North Jefferson News All-Star Wrestling Team is selected from an abundance of riches, so to speak.
The five public schools in our area sent no less than two dozen wrestlers to the state championships in Huntsville, and four of those — Tyler Newton and Brandon Buchanan of Hayden, Travis Shellnutt of Mortimer Jordan and Brett Pennington of Fultondale — stood atop their respective awards platforms when all was said and done.
That foursome leads our all-stars, along with another two-time state champ, Jordan’s Brandon Brindley, who came up two points short of a third straight title this year.
This team skews somewhat toward the lighter weights, as local schools found tough going all year in anything heavier than the 160-pound class. Only Gardendale’s Joel Jones, at 171 pounds and a sixth-place finisher at Huntsville, and Fultondale’s Sherman Owens at 215 pounds, made our list.
(Because of that, our team is not evenly divided among weight classes. We’ve doubled up on some weights, while omitting other weights entirely due to a lack of qualifiers.)
Besides Jones, Daniel Swann and Connor Hayman from the Rockets are on our list. Swann won fourth place at 140 pounds and Hayman was fifth at 125 in the Class 6A finals.
In addition to Shellnutt and Brindley, the Blue Devils are represented by Jake Jasper, who took third place in Class 5A at 160 pounds, and Josh Pate, who placed fourth at 152.
Fultondale’s Steven Lindsey joined Pennington and Owens on our team. Lindsey finished fourth at 112 pounds in Class 1A-4A.
Hayden’s two state champs are joined by Trey Howse, a state finalist at 112 pounds.
