It was wild, it was weird, it was contentious.
And in the end, it was the end for Mortimer Jordan.
Once the fouls, the injuries and the spectator ejections were added up, the result was a 45-28 win for host Wenonah in the sub-regional round of the Class 5A girls basketball playoffs.
The Dragons wore the Blue Devils down with coach Emmanuel Bell’s trademark press and trap, which has just two varieties: half court and full court.
“We don’t run it any other way,” Bell said, “until the other team forces us.”
Jordan actually fared well in there press break, getting the ball inside for several easy lay-up opportunities — but whiffed on at least four of those shots.
Over time, the Dragons turned up the heat on their trap, jumping into the Devils’ passing leads with regularity and grabbing numerous steals.
Play became more and more heated as the night wore on, until Jordan sophomore point guard Haylie McCleney was slammed into a metal door near the corner of the court.
The incident resulted in a technical foul for Devils center Peyton Davis, who complained bitterly to the officials about keeping control of the game. It also brought about the ejection by Birmingham police of two Jordan fans, one a player’s parent who was confronted with pepper spray in the grandstand.
McCleney was believed to have suffered a mild concussion, according to coach Lynn Elkins.
The incident happened with 5:55 left in the game, and the Devils (16-10) down 28-23.
But with their floor general gone and Davis getting her fourth foul on the technical, the die was cast. Davis and forward Brianna Nation, the remaining two of Jordan’s big three, simply could not mount the comeback on their own.
Wenonah (20-11) scored 11 of the next 12 points, putting the game away for good.
The normally mild-mannered Elkins had his fill of the officiating.
“You couldn’t say anything to them. I wanted to ask them about a foul, and they threatened me with a technical,” Elkins said. “But we were done when she [McCleney] went out. Peyton’s tech gave her four fouls, and they just spread us out. We don’t have a lot of depth, so they could do that.”
Davis led the Devils with 13 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks in her final game as a Blue Devil. Nation scored five in her final game. McCleney had a season-low two points, with Tiffany Chaviers adding four.
Victoria Billingsley led Wenonah with 18 points, and Stephaney Jackson scored 11.
The Dragons face Fort Payne Tuesday in the regionals at Jacksonville.
