Brianna Nation saved the best for last.
The Mortimer Jordan senior forward scored a career-high 30 points as the Blue Devils had their way with American Christian, winning 67-45 Tuesday night.
The Patriots stayed close for much of the first half, and appeared to have new life win Devils’ center Peyton Davis had to sit midway through the second quarter with three fouls.
But Nation took command from that point, and when Davis returned after halftime, Jordan put their game in another gear.
Davis had 15 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks. Haylie McCleney added 17 points, with key 3-pointers during Davis’ absence.
Gardendale 55, Pleasant Grove 45: The Rockets got out to a fast 20-4 start after one period, but struggled to maintain their momentum in the second half. However, the Spartans still couldn’t get close enough to pose a threat.
“We started great, but progressively got worse, quarter by quarter,” Rockets coach Ryan Griffin said. “They did a good job with their press, making us go faster than we needed to go.”
Bekah Myers led Gardendale with 17 points, and Kasey Jones put in 15.
The Rockets committed 40 turnovers, but also had 18 steals.
Sumiton Christian 36, Fultondale 32: The Wildcats held a slim lead as late as the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter, but a late 3-pointer by Emily Burt put the Eagles up for good.
“We should’ve won this one. But we made some stupid fouls, and we didn’t execute when we needed to,: said Fultondale coach Melanie Gearhart.
Jakayla Pollard led the Wildcats with 12 points.
