A restaurant chain wants to offer dinner and a movie to north Jefferson residents, but it will cost you a coat.
What-A-Burger in Fultondale is collecting gently used or new coats through Dec. 7 as part of a partnership with the Salvation Army and the McWane Center. The restaurant began collecting the coats on Friday.
Those who donate a coat will receive a coupon for a free hamburger and a ticket to the IMAX movie “Santa Vs. the Snowman,” showing at the McWane Center in Birmingham.
What-A-Burger area manager Don Burleson said this is the first year the restaurant chain has gotten involved with a holiday charity cause. There are 10 other What-A-Burger locations in Jefferson and Shelby counties that are also participating.
“We are now large enough to have some area-wide impact,” Burleson said. “We wanted to focus on one thing that all of our stores can do.”
He said the response has been “outstanding” so far and there have been between 130 and 160 coats donated at all of the stores. However, the majority of the donated coats are adult sizes, so he asked for additional coats for children.
