One suspect is in custody and police officers are searching for two others following a reported burglary in Gardendale late Friday night.
At 1:15 am Friday, the Gardendale Police Department responded to a report of a burglary in progress at Murphy Oil, located 916 Odum Road in Gardendale.
The suspects took approximately $10,000 worth of cigarettes, which were recovered, according to Gardendale Police Chief Mike Walker in a press release.
Walker said a witness reported that two vehicles were involved.
Officers located the vehicles, which were traveling south on Interstate 65.
When the officers attempted to stop the suspects, they refused to comply and a pursuit began, Walker said.
The driver of one of the vehicles, a red Ford Taurus, lost control at the 41st street exit in Birmingham. As the vehicle came to a stop, the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
He was captured a short distance away by Gardendale and Fultondale police officers.
The suspect is Kenneth Dewayne Mobley, a 22-year-old black male, of north Birmingham.
He is being held on charges of burglary, with a $10,000 bond, and theft of property, with a $15,000 bond.
The second vehicle, a blue Nissan Altima, was abandoned by two black males on 39th Terrace North in Birmingham.
No injuries occurred to law enforcement personnel, suspects or citizens during the pursuit and capture, said Walker.
The investigation is ongoing. Walker anticipate that other arrests will be made as the investigation continues.
