Troopers probe death of man hit on interstate

The Alabama Department of Public Safety is continuing its investigation into the death of a man who was struck by a car on Interstate 65 south Saturday.
On Tuesday, State Trooper Charles Dysart said the man, identified as Larry James Salter, 55, of Greenville, was being transported by a Blount County EMS ambulance to Bryce Mental Hospital in Tuscaloosa.
At about 9:35 a.m., the ambulance reportedly pulled over to the shoulder of the instate near mile marker 275 in Morris to tend to the patient. Dysart said Salter exited the ambulance and entered oncoming traffic.
Salter was then struck by a 1999 Buick Century driven by Edith Wells Joice, 84, of Hayden. Salter was transported to UAB Hospital where he later died from his injuries. Joice was also reportedly treated at St. Vincent’s Hospital for injuries..
Tammy Sherbert, operations manager for Blount EMS Ambulance Service, had no comment when contacted on Tuesday.
