Jefferson County

Woman killed in wreck


The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal wreck on Friday.

Ivy Clements, 71, of Dora, was reportedly killed when the car she was riding in collided with another vehicle in the 2500 block of Corner Road. The wreck occurred at 2:25 p.m. Clements’ daughter, Loria Clements, was driving the vehicle that was struck.

A witness to the accident told investigators that a vehicle driven by Jerry Lemley crossed into the Clements’ lane of traffic. He told authorities that he was having steering problems.

Ivy Clements was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter was transported to UAB Hosptial with non-life threatening injuries.

The wreck is reportedly still under investigation and possible charges are pending.



Cardiff

Dog attacks child


A five-year-old Cardiff boy was hospitallzed Saturday after reportedly being attacked by a pit bull.

In a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened in the 200 block of Maple Street. The young boy, who was not identified, was in the yard playing when the attack happened. His father was doing yard work and his mother was reportedly inside the home.

The dog reportedly entered the yard and bit the child on the legs and head, causing deep gashes. A neighbor responded and shot the dog twice, killing the animal. It is not known who the dog belonged to.

The victim was reportedly taken to Children’s Hosptial in Birmingham where he was listed in good condition late Saturday.



Gardendale

City to collect ‘stuff’


The Gardendale Public Works Department is inviting residents to “Bring Your Stuff” and help clean up the city.

Residents are invited to bring non-hazardous household discards to the brush recycling site on Fieldstown Road behind the soccer field on Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Household garbage will not be accepted. The public works department will also help residents unload items if need. For more information, contact the department at 631-3394.



Morris

Alleged ice thief caught


Cooperation between police departments led to an arrest in Morris over the weekend.

A 38-year-old white male decided to relieve the Dollar General in Morris of two bags of ice late Friday night, according to Morris Police Chief Brian Cochran.

After Morris Police officers arrested the suspect on charges of theft by deception 3rd, they discovered that he did in fact have enough money in his wallet for the ice. Ice at the store costs $1.90 per bag. Morris Police Chief Brian Cochran said his officers were watching out for the man after the Kimberly Police Department called to warn them the man might be headed to Morris.

He apparently had been asked to leave IGA MarketPlace in Kimberly just prior to his arrest in Morris.



Gardendale

Memorial bricks for sale


The Gardendale Beautification Commission is still selling bricks for its renovated memorial park project. The black granite bricks are $30 each and will have three lines of text. The bricks can be purhcased by anyone who would like to honor a military veteran. The commission is also seeking names of any servicemen or women killed in action and any wartime photos to complete the park monument.
